About the project...
The database of the Anonymous Byzantine scribes of the 14th century includes samples of their own handwriting, information about them and their copying activity, as well as the manuscripts that they copied, and the relevant bibliography.
The course of research has proved that the non-identifying of the scribes of different manuscripts has resulted in wrong conclusions regarding the dating of the manuscripts themselves and, in many cases, the texts contained in them. In addition, the study of the scribes, their interests and their personality has contributed to a more thorough understanding of the interests and the surrounding atmosphere of their time, in general.
This database is a tool of great importance for paleographers and philologists. The ease of access to the material, which accompanied by handwriting samples of each scribe as well as the existing bibliography about the manuscript and the anonymous scribe, enable any scholar studying the copying activity of this particular century, or any researcher who studies the manuscript tradition of a text, to draw out basic conclusions about the scribe and the manuscript.
